Tainted!

I've just been looking at random blogs, the student profiles on the hbs website.

It's hopeless. not a *single* case of a software engineer getting into HBS!

finance/consulting/military/government/politics/liberal-arts/philosophy/manufacturing/
operations..anything but s/w development.

I have been tainted by 5 years of software engineerdo(o)m.

There's no frikkin way I'm getting into HBS. :(

Not to discourage you. But, I have heard from many sources that HBS is biased against techies in general. But of course each individual app is unique and if you can talk abt a lot of leadership both at work and outside, there is a good chance. Good Luck with your apps.

I say, never say never! =) But also be realistic.

Apply to schools you think you would get into. Do those applications first. Build yourself up for HBS. I applied to HBS last, but I'm not holding my breath. If it happens, it happens. If not I have other options.

Good Luck!

Cheer up. I too have been sucking up all info that blogs can provide. Like you, I try to match my techie background to those who have got admits...

The fact is 90% of people who get admits dont even have a blog!

I used to harbor similar notions, but now I think there're no prototypes. I probably won't myself be applying to HBS for 'fit' reasons. However, here is what I think ...

My manager is from HBS - background: BS & MS in computer science, worked in the tech field before MBA. I know another co-worker with a similar background who got in (class of 2003). I would say HBS is not biased against techies, rather I think it is more likely that they're biased towards certain other qualities like leadership. In a gold-rush industry like tech, you really need to stand head and shoulders above the rest. Think about your competition - smart and hungry kids that made CTO/CEO wrecking 4 startups in as many years. There is a lot of FUD doing the rounds about HBS and tech. My advice to you would be to stay focused on yourself and your application while scanning your environment. There is one thing that's certain though - if you think you cannot make it to HBS, I promise you, you will not. Good luck.

There is a sentiment that HBS is not huge on extending admits to Indian IT professionals (possibly IT professionals in general). I am not sure how much of that is true because I personally people from the IT industry (Indians included) get into HBS. However, all of them had some degree of managerial experiences and strong leadership profile both inside and outside of work. The key I believe is your established leadership potential for HBS. Given your background, why dont you look into Stanford as well? Not to say in any way that stay away from HBS. Good luck! Look at me dolling out advice when I havent even taken my GMAT yet.
